You can use PowerPoint 2010 on PCs to create a PowerPoint movie with narration. This is a way to add a video to your Moodle course for a flipped classroom or add a slide presentation to a Mahara page. You will need a microphone and speakers. You can’t create a movie with narration using PowerPoint 2011 for Mac.
To Record:
- Open or create a PowerPoint slide show
- From the Slide Show tab, click Record Slide Show
- Both “Slide and animation timings” and “Narrations and laser pointer” should be checked
- Record your narration from the beginning of the slide show or from the current slide
To Export as a Movie:
- From the File tab, click Save & Send
- Under “File Types”, click Create a Video
- From the drop down list in the right panel, choose Internet & DVD for creating a video in medium size format (640×480)
- Click the “Create Video” button
- Save the file to your computer*
*The file will be saved in Windows Media Video (.wmv) format. This type of file does not play in Moodle or Mahara. Convert the file to a compatible format such as mp4, flv or swf. Flash video (.flv) works best in Mahara. Use a tool like Zamzar to convert your file.
In order to make your PowerPoint accessible to people with disabilities, add captions to images and narration. Use the add-in tool STAMP (Sub-titling text add-in for Microsoft PowerPoint) to add captioning to your PowerPoint movie.
