If you are looking for a free tool to create surveys, check out Google form.  Google form is a Google drive application available through your UNCA email account (see Technology Tip: Cloud Computing with Google Drive).  You can use Google form to create an online survey, and then email it to survey participants.  You can also embed a link to the survey in a Moodle course or Mahara webpage.  Responses will be collected in a spreadsheet where you can apply charting, sorting, and mathematical functions. You can also share the form with others so they can collaborate on construction of the survey or simply view the survey results.

To create a Google form:

  • Open your UNCA Gmail account
  • Click on Drive link at the top of the screen
  • Click the Create button in the left margin
  • Click Form from the drop down list

Google sees collecting personal information as a potential security threat and can block the form.  Apparently this is more a problem with private Google accounts, not domain accounts like our UNCA email accounts.  The best policy is not to ask for personal information in a Google form.  See Matt Scully’s comment in the following blog:
