Welcome back, Bulldogs! I hope everyone has had a relaxing holiday break and are ready to start the new semester! I am Laurel Buffaloe, manager of the Media Design Lab. The Media Design Lab, or MDL, has hit some great milestones from this past semester. The amount of people who have used the lab has DOUBLED in a single semester compared to the previous year!! We love to see all of the creative attributes the students, faculty, and staff have put into their studies, classes, and in their own personal projects. Something the MDL staff has noticed is that there is a wave of podcasters coming in and using the Self Service Audio Recording Studio. There has been an array of topics in these podcasts, from health and wellness to stories of past jobs.

Wanna start a podcast? Here are some tips and tricks for creating yours today!

  1. Every idea is original! Even if someone has spoken on a subject before, your opinion is your own. Speak your truth and your thoughts, and who knows, someone may listen and relate to it!
  2. Use the wine corks! In the Self Service Audio Recording Studio, we have a bowl of wine corks. Place it in between your front teeth and start talking with it. Why? Your mouth and tongue are now working extra hard to pronounce each syllable. This encourages you to open your mouth and add more volume to your voice. It’s a great warm up before delivering your talk.
  3. Record an intro and outro! New listeners may join anywhere through your podcasting journey. Give a short introduction about your podcast so they can get up to speed and hook them into your show. In the end, summarize key points and give a call to action (i.e. subscribing to the show, leaving feedback, follow you on social media, etc.).
  4. Invite guests on your show! Mix things up! Add new perspectives! They could potentially bring their own audience along and could become fans of your show.
  5. Video tape your show! Don’t want to use the Audio Recording Studio? Come to our Self Service Video Recording Studio located right next door! The MDL has mics and SD cards you can rent out. The Video Studio provides a video camera on a tripod, chairs, tables, lights, green screen, and a black backdrop for you to use. Video podcasting will diversify your content and reach out to people who would rather watch your content. You can also upload your podcast on other platforms like Youtube or Instagram reels!

Try it out! You may end up loving it! Come down to the Media Design Lab to work on your podcasts. Beginners are welcome and staff will help you every step of the way. From recording to editing we are here for you. While we do allow walk-ins for the studios, reserving will secure your time. To reserve the Self Service Audio or Video Recording Studios, head over to the Ramsey Library Website. Under the Research Support tab, click on Media Design Lab and click on the reserve tab

Happy Podcasting!!
